Social TV
USA Networks builds "Character Chatter" and provides a centralized second screen destination for fans.
When USA Network needed a way to engage their audience in a 'two screen' experience they had a choice. They could send them all to a Facebook Fan Page or Twitter, or they could build their own, branded experience that allowed them to keep control of the traffic, customer relationship and monetization. They chose the latter.
But beyond this, they chose to embrace the existing conversation and value creation on b2c social networks and even the legacy forums on their own site to create a new, unified view of the global conversation about their shows. By using Echo StreamServer to aggregate multiple data sources along side on-page chat messages in a single real-time stream, they created a new and novel experience that attracts users, captures off site values and keeps audiences coming back for more.
They call it "Character Chatter". With "Character Chatter" users can tab between various television shows on USA Network view and to participate in the real-time conversations that matter most to them. For special occasions, USA Network curators can push their favorite 'Chatter' updates live on air - in real-time - via a special moderation green room.
By making Character Chatter the backbone of their real-time social engagement strategy, USA Network is changing the way that they communicate with fans and acquire viewers for new shows.
In fact, using this real-time engagement strategy, USA Network was able to grow their unique visitors from zero to 300K in 60 days for a new show.
USA Network continues to customize, innovate and differentiate the product over time to engage their audience more deeply during some of the most popular TV shows on American television.
